Internship Opportunities

Are you a resident of the City of Alexandria, VA?  Are you an undergraduate or graduate student looking for a grassroots campaign experience?  Even better, do you live in the vicinity of Landmark Mall or Cameron Station? Great! Your neighbor, Heather Thornton, is running for your local School Board for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) in District C, and she needs your help.

Internships are unpaid but college credit can be obtained with approval from your college or university.  Interns will be working on an exciting campaign where Heather represents a large majority of residents in Alexandria who don’t have children, but firmly believe when our schools are at their best our community is at its best.  Each intern will gain first-hand experience and exposure to local campaigning for a School Board position, and will leave the campaign with lifelong skills, important community connections, and a stronger appreciation for all ACPS staff who do so much for our students and community.

We are looking for interns from different backgrounds to fill various roles including, but not limited to a Campaign Manager, Writer, Social Media Manager, and Field Manager.  Let’s talk about how you envision your role on the team!

Interns will be able to take on leadership roles on a number of ongoing projects and tasks including: field communications, social media, policy research, direct mailing, marketing, coalition building, fundraising, and event management.

Heather believes education is powered by our community. Interns must be comfortable engaging in the community, and will be expected to support community initiatives that support the campaign’s goals.

Note, this campaign is NOT politically affiliated, but there are strong ties to the local political community.

  • Commitment to work 8-16 hours per week through the General Election on November 6th, with a large amount of that time being remote.

  • Ideal candidates should be organized, reliable, prompt, detail-oriented and self-motivated.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Active social media experience — with the ability to represent our campaign online professionally and courteously.

  • Willingness to learn voter database (parents, school staff, ACPS adminstration, community members, etc.).

  • Willingness to communicate directly with voters and business leaders through phone and door-to-door contact, always keeping in mind you are a representative of the campaign.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Desire to work hard.  This is a campaign; enthusiasm, commitment, and a strong work ethic are a must.  We have a short window of time, and a lot to do during that time frame. We need a team of people that are just as passionate as we are.

Even better!

  • Graduates of T.C Williams High School are a plus, but not required.

  • Bilingual (any other language, especially Spanish, Amharic and Arabic)
